Robin Wall Kimmerer's book Braiding Sweetgrass is a beautiful intersection between science and nature, and shows us what is possible for us when we move in relationship to nature rather than an executor of it. This book touched Kacey deeply, and in this episode she explores some of the tangibles that might be useful in our healing as a culture, as well as some reasons why we can't let it in.
Episode Highlights:
GIFT ECONOMY: Indigenous practices like Gift Economy, Honorable Harvest, and Thanksgiving Address, and what they have to teach us all
LIMITATIONS: How our application of language and religion prevents us from operating relationally
VOICE: The Yogic concept of Vak Siddhi; why our voice means everything and also how language can't adequately capture anything
KEEP MOVING: What our brains do to prevent us from moving forward in a new way

Change Your Emotions, Change Your Story
When you alter the way you habitually experience your inner world, you have the power to change the trajectory of your entire life.

Why is Letting Go so difficult and so important?
When it comes to transformation and changing your life, you must let go of the old ways of being to create space for you to create and usher-in the new ways of being that you desire.
It’s physics. Two ways of being can’t exist in the same place at the same time.
· You cannot drink daily and also experience the peace and health of a non-drinker.
· It is difficult when you constantly find fault with your partner in your mind, to also experience the nurturing container of unconditional love.
· When you cling to your pain and identify as a victim, it is challenging to create a consistent experience of pleasure and power.
Read moreUsing Negative Emotion to Fuel a Positive Result
One of the strategies I re-route the most often in working with pattern change is people’s tendency to use NEGATIVE emotion to fuel a POSITIVE result.
Examples of this might include:
* Using the shame of being dependent upon alcohol to motivate yourself to stop
* Disliking your body so much that you use that disgust or discontent to motivate weight loss
* Being so fearful of being abandoned that you have to be perfect in your relationships
What if growing, evolving, transforming, and changing didn’t have to be this way?
What if you didn’t have to think the worst possible thoughts about yourself in order to inspire the best results?
Not only can you grow, but it can feel GOOD getting there. At the very least, you don’t have to feel so bad.
When we think awful things about ourselves, it always shows up in the results. So bludgeoning yourself into your desires can’t be fully working for you.

My life today is far from perfect, but it is so much different than it used to be. Better. More expansive. More possibilities. True and authentic to who I am as a person. I’m proud of myself and who I am and how I am living.
Before, years ago when I used to drink alcohol (it feels so good to be able to say it like that!!!), I was in a CYCLE of COLLAPSE. What I mean by that, is that I drank alcohol on most nights, so whatever growth or goodness I managed create by day, seemed to be swept away by the actions of the night. I was essentially running in place. I would wake up feeling terrible physically, mentally, and emotionally. Then I would spend all my energy that day trying to get back to regular, to come home that night only to set myself back by drinking again. Rinse and repeat. For years.

Heading into the New Year brings a lot of excitement and hopes for change, but I can guarantee one thing and that is this — NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES.
So many people expect that simply *hoping* or *longing* or *wishing* for things to be different will somehow be enough for things to change. The deep yearning that we do feels angsty and powerful enough internally that we think it will be enough to move us.
See it to Achieve it
The Reticular Activating System inside of the mind is a filtering and processing tool that the brain uses to categorize what is important to us, and then filter what happens to us according to those categories.

Everyone’s got that thing. The one area of your life that consistently trips you up. The thing that holds you back, that prevents you from being completely full. That thing that you keep telling yourself that once it’s *fixed* or *solved* or *healed* or *sorted* in some way, THEN my life will be good/complete/perfect.

The subconscious mind is a powerful force. Most of the foundational thoughts and beliefs and paradigms through which we view the world today are formed in early adolescence, by the age of seven. SEVEN!!! That means that so many of the rules by which you are living your life are based on information you received when you were too young to fully comprehend it. As adults, we are still driven by these lessons we learned and decisions we unconsciously made at the very beginning of our lives. Perhaps it might be helpful to revisit some of these messages now that we are grown?
We’re constantly filtering through our filters, and we use that filtered information to make decisions based on those filters, and then take the results and re-cycle them through our existing filters. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I’ve been contemplating this a lot lately. We all say that we want to be happy, but who really embodies happiness and joy on a regular basis? With all the challenges of modern-day living, I find that we are good at pursuing happiness, but not so good at actually reaching out and CLAIMING it for ourselves.
If you would have asked *Kacey five years ago* what she needed in order to be happy and successful, she would have listed things like: become sober from alcohol, plant a firm foundation financially, heal old wounds that have held me back in the past, create a loving and committed partnership, land in a healthy body that I can sustain easily and consistently, and create a career out of my life’s purpose.
HOLY COW!!! Mission accomplished!!! Wow. It blows my mind that I have every single thing on that list in the life I’m living right now. I am so freaking grateful for the work that I’ve done and for everyone who has supported me along the way.
So, if I really do currently have everything that I need to be happy and experience joy, why isn’t it…easier?

I think I’ve always had a great life. I mean, at least a pretty good one. However, if you asked me to use one word and one word only to describe my adult life in its majority, I would inarguably have to use the word STRUGGLE. Prior to my introduction to coaching, my life was filled with all sorts of great things, but the way that I chose to get there, the energy surrounding each move, the climate of it all, felt like a huge burden, struggle, one problem and issue and mess after the next. I read countless self-help books, went to therapy, tried so many different ways to quit drinking, took up yoga, started teaching yoga…the list goes on and on. Nothing truly shifted me out of that struggle scenario until I began to work with an outside perspective in a new way.
Coaching Encourages Transformation
My life has transformed into something truly exceptional in the past four years since I have incorporated coaching into my life. Working with a handful of various coaches with different specialties and skill sets has cracked open my life in the most beautiful and glorious ways. This has given me the power and the curriculum and the inspiration to create a new life for myself, even though I didn’t have a specific blueprint to model it after.

All of nature moves in cycles. There is a time to rest, a time to invest, a time to harvest, and a time to enjoy. Each season uses what is available at the moment in nature, to accomplish a specific set of tasks that can only be completed during a unique period of time, under a certain set of conditions.
We never get angry or disappointed with the peony bush when it does not give us gorgeous flowers during the winter months, filled with icy freeze. We do not blame the sapling, in its years of infancy, for failing to provide us with tasty fruit in the harvest months, still growing and unable to support the weight of growing produce. Rarely do we long for crispy leaves to roll around in, while we are enjoying the shade they provide overhead, instead.
Why are humans any different?
We allow everything in nature to follow its rhythmic cycles, why do we not allow ourselves the same freedom in structure?
